Vocabulary sometimes gets left out in primary grades because we feel like we have "bigger fish" to fry in getting kids to actually decode and read. But explicit tier 2 vocabulary instruction needs a place at the table in the Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade classroom too. I love using picture books to teach vocabulary during our whole group reading lessons. It's quick, authentic, and so easy that you can leave it on your sub plans! You can read about the routines I use in this blog post, but today, I'm answering a question I often get about tier 2 vocabulary words. How do I decide what words to do? Where do the words come from? And what exactly...
I LOVE hearing from other teachers, and one of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “How do you set up your math or literacy block?” A couple of months ago, I wrote all about how I set up my Math Workshop, and today, I’m chatting about how I structure and organize literacy instruction in my classroom. Structuring your literacy block is critical to making the most of your time together. Not only are we focusing on reading and writing skills during our literacy time, but we should also be growing our students’ content knowledge, confidence as readers, and encouraging a love of reading. For the purpose of this post, I’ll be writing about setting up and organizing literacy rotations...
Are your students intrigued by studying about animals? My third graders always loved the animal stories in the basal reader the best. (Yes, we had basal readers and this was in 2013!) One of our favorite stories was about an eccentric old man that visited areas of the woodlands, swamps, bogs, and grasslands. His story was fiction with factual information abut the animals sprinkled into the story. Perfect! Read, add some science and research, create animal booklets, and build animal models. Fast forward to the STEM Lab! How can I still create excitement about amazing animals and follow our special STEM classroom? Well, I have a treat for you! So many of my ideas are now reality and these resources...

Every September, my class of kindergarten kids look at me in excitement. They don’t know it, but this is the year they’ll start learning to read: learning the letter sounds, sounding out words and eventually reading sentences. Some sail through and become masters before the year is over. Others take longer, but I know they’re on their way when I send them to grade one. But some kids just don’t seem to be able to grasp some of the basic skills, and it worries me. When I tell parents, “They’re just not ready yet,” is it the truth? Will they catch up? And is there anything I could be doing differently to get them where they need to be? Feeling...
