Homemade Refried Beans
You guys know that I love making homemade versions of store-bought items to save money andIve been wanting to make my own homemade refried beans for a while now, but havent had the time.
Then last week I made up a batch of mySlow Cooker Pinto Beans and decided togive it a try with the leftover cooked beans.
I normally freeze the leftoversto use in chili, but this time Im making them into refried beans for my favorite Bean & Cheese Freezer Burritos.
Since I already had cooked beans on hand, the process was really simple and the results were amazing. Seriously, I may never buy canned refried beans again.
Things are just way better when you make them yourself, you know? Plus, these beans are freezer-friendly which means I could make up several batches to keep on hand for whenever I need them. Sweet!
How to Make Homemade Refried Beans:
Mash beans with potato masher or blender until desired consistency is reached.
Add oil and spices.
Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until desired thickness is obtained. Beans will thicken as they cool. You may add water or chicken broth if beans are too thick.
How to Freeze Homemade Refried Beans:
Once beans have cooled, spoon them into a labeled freezer bag or other freezer container and place them in the freezer.
Beans will keep in the freezer for 3-6 months.
When you are ready to use, simply place the beans overnight in the fridge to thaw or place the container of frozen beans in a bowl of warm water until thawed.
