Like many of you, I’ve been using this time to really fall back in love with my bag collection. Shopping my own closet has allowed me to take a step back and realize one of the main reasons I love bags is that I find them super easy to personalize and style. Whether it be with scarves, bag charms, or modifications, the way I dress up my bags is often a direct reflection of my mood. Styling my bags is also a fun way to add a sense of character to my chosen purse of the day. Today I’ll be breaking down how I use various purse accessories to stylize my bags.
Scarves
I’ve only recently gotten into using scarves as a way to accessorize my bags and I can honestly thank Dior’s Mitzahs for that. Though I never purchased the initial Mitzah, I was first in line to get the astrology and tarot versions. I especially love these versions because they have a different design on each side. They usually feature a more elaborate illustration on the front and a simpler, more graphic pattern on the back. It almost feels like you’re getting two scarves in one because you can choose one side or the other depending on your look.
As far as Hermès scarves go, I’ve only acquired two so far. The Twillon was my first H addition, and because of its length you can use it as a make-shift crossbody or shoulder strap. I found its functionality to be very valuable and it was a deciding factor in my purchase. My next was the “Les Leopards Bandana” twilly, and it was truly love at first sight. Though it lives on many of my bags, I bought it specifically for my Hermès Cordelière bag! The Cordelière style hardware on this bag reminds me of the Mexican sport of Charrería (think of it as a cross between rodeo and equestrian dance). I liked how this scarf was very bandana-esqe, giving off some western vibes.
Bag Charms
Bag charms are something I love to have in my styling kit, as they are a quick and easy way to change up your bags up with very minimal effort. They seem to get the most use on my Hermès pieces, as those bags tend to come off more serious. My collection of charms consists of various Hermès fruits, a Loewe UFO charm, some tasty Laduree macaroons, and my personal favorites; two preserved orchids from Dauphinette. When I’m feeling a little silly I’ll add a fruit charm, or if I’m feeling extra romantic I’ll use an orchid—I find them all to be very expressive. Farfetch has a great variety of charms from various brands.
Bag Chains
I know I’ve talked about my liking for these handy acrylic straps before, but I also have a chain style strap in gold too. They’re really great for adding an edge to some of my bags that are more classic in style, like my Box Kelly. Aside from bringing some personality to the bag, it also can improve the functionality if you adjust the length to make a top handle. You can wear it as a shoulder strap too. Though it’s worth noting that you should be careful not to overload your bag while using these for function versus decoration, as unbalanced stress can potentially damage your bag.
