Today, I’m sharing a fun kids craft idea inspired by Frida Kahlo! This Frida Kahlo Craft for Kids is super simple thanks to our free printable template. This would make a great craft idea for an artist study or after reading about Frida’s life.
Frida Kahlo Kids’ Craft
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist who blended classical and folk art to create colorful and powerful works of art exploring the topics of identity, post-colonialism, gender, class and race in Mexican society.
Her approach to how she lived her free-spirited life and her bravery with using her talents to address real issues has made her a feminist icon for many, including my daughter.
I try to keep her inspired with stories of strong women who stand up for what they believe in and use their gifts in powerful ways, and Frida Kahlo definitely exemplifies that!
Frida often used herself as the subject in her artwork (with her self-portraits) so even her own image has become iconic.
Today’s craft nods to her art – a portrait of Frida, her ubiquitous flowers, and bright, bold colors.
This Frida Kahlo craft is an easy one for kids to make and would be cute as a framed piece of wall decor, an adornment on a homemade card, or even a magnet! It’s a great way to follow up an artist study or a book mentioning Frida’s work and life, such as:
- Frida Kahlo and her Animalitos by Monica Brown
- Viva Frida by Yuyi Morales
- Frida Kahlo: The Artist Who Painted Herself by Margaret Frith
- Who Was Frida Kahlo? by Sarah Fabiny

- Frida by Jonah Winter

How to Make a Frida Kahlo Paper Craft
Select black cardstock paper for the eyebrows, eyes and hair; red for the lips and any color you prefer for the skin. Trace the patterns from the given template on the selected papers. Cut out the traced patterns nicely using scissors.
Take the hair cutout and the head cutout. Use craft glue to attach the hair on the top side of the head cutout but making sure to pace the top part of the head cutout on the backs die of the hair pattern. Also bring the top side of the ears in front of the hair. Arrange the hair cutout nicely and apply glue top attach it.
Attach the eyebrows, eyes and lips accordingly.
Select colored craft papers for the flowers and dress (if you want to add clothing). Trace the flower and spiral patterns on the colored craft papers selected for the flowers.
Take the 2 flower cutout and attach them together criss-cross wise. Take the spiral cutout and start to roll it from its outer edge.
Continue to roll the spiral paper from its outer edge towards the center. Once the roll reaches the center of the spiral, allow the spiral to loosen up a bit. Apply glue on the bottom side of the rolled part to attach it with the center of the spiral pattern. Attach the rolled paper on the center of the flower prepared in the previous step.
Similarly make more paper flowers. Cut out some leaf shapes from green colored craft papers.
Attach the paper flowers on the hair part of the paper Frida craft.
Attach the flowers and then attach the leaves between the flowers. Use colored craft paper to trace and cut out the top (clothing). Use golden or any colored craft paper to cut out the triangle earrings. Attach the top and the earrings to complete the Frida paper craft.
