The Primera Generación Dance Collective Artistic Residency has come to UC Riverside for a second year.
The dance group, whose residency began Monday, Feb. 13, and ends Saturday, Feb. 18, was formed by first-generation Mexican American artists who are UCR alumni. It focuses on “generating works that speak to their brown, working-class experiences,” according to the residency’s event webpage.

“The idea is to work with students, in particular Black and brown students, to help them realize dance is a tangible career,” UCR spokesperson Sandra Martínez said in an email Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Programs include classes in Latin Social Dance that are open to anyone on campus, master classes in dancemaking for Dance Department students and artist visits.
The residency will culminate with a performance, “Nepantla,” on Saturday, Feb 18, at the UCR Culver Center in downtown Riverside. Undergraduate students will perform alongside the dance company, following a showcase by students from Riverside City College and A.B. Miller High School in Fontana.
The free event is set for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
