Distance Learning: Remote Guided Reading Lessons Made Easy!

This post may be coming to you a bit late, but hopefully I can provide some tips and resources to support your efforts to bring small group reading instruction to your students in a way that is manageable for both you and them!  IT CAN BE DONE!School ended (as we know it) here in Michigan on March 13 (yes, it was Friday the 13th).  After the shock wore off, panic began to set in.  My thoughts were spinning:  "How will we support our striving readers, who are already so far behind their peers?  They receive so much support at school...single dips, double dips, triple dips!  They can't afford this time away from school."  I immediately began to think about how...

LEGO Inspired Story Retelling of The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Read and Build with this awesome learning activity LEGO inspired story retelling of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Inspired by Eric Carle see how to work on reading comprehension with your child. Should Poor, (Or Rich) Women Have Several Children?

— How many babies are too many? I think the question is the wrong one. My husband and I frequently debate whether people — with our planet in trouble and pandemics still to come — whether people should have babies at all. I fully understand those who don’t wish to have kids. I try to understand those who want several kids. I truthfully have less comprehension of the latter choice. Of course, our culture does not support mothers, childcare, affordable housing, earnings, and healthcare, but none of these are sole reasons why women should think about having fewer kids. Like everything else on Earth, there are too many factors to name. Should struggling parents — which usually means moms —...

Who Knows How Long We Have?

— Lots of us are cooped up together, sometimes with a lover. Sometimes with a family. Sometimes with housemates. And, for some, all alone. It’s important to remember, that if you are like most human beings, the last category — your aloneness — will occur at some stage. People relocate. People get sick. Parents die. Partners leave. And, widowhood, too, is almost inevitable. How many couples can you name in your lifetime that all died at the same moment? This means that someone, somewhere, is unexpectedly alone. It is not a contingency that we routinely prepare for, after all. Yes, many of us are hunkered down during a worldwide crisis. Dare I write an article without mentioning its all to...

How to Boost Reading Fluency during Remote Learning

Like many other educators, I’ve been missing my students greatly and have been trying to wrap my head around providing quality specialized intervention instruction during distance learning and remote instruction. Most of my students have goals in the area of reading fluency. During the school year we used a variety of strategies to increase their fluency. One of our most effective strategies was Repeated Reading. In the Repeated Reading strategy, students read the same short passage of text several times, improving with each time they read. Repeated Reading has been shown to improve decoding automaticity, phrasing, comprehension, rate and confidence. Now here’s the exciting part! I’ve made a YouTube playlist, Fun with Fluency, which uses the Repeated Reading strategy with...
